Er no it's a Sportsman all right, the TDD chassis number proves that. But presumably by the time they got to the point of building them to special order only they had ditched the Sportsman front end in favour of the Standard look.

It has a Sportsman commission number, in the range beyond TDD1000, & was manufactured in 1959. It has a 4 speed overdrive gearbox. Phil Homer has been to see it & will be doing a feature on it for the Standard Car Review. There is a Vignale saloon, also known to the club, which has commission number TDD1069DLO manufactured in August 1960, which has the 3 speed overdrive fitted . All these variants of the Sportsman were all built to special order. Some apparently went to New Zealand, whether they had Sportsman front ends is not known at this stage. Perhaps one of our New Zealand friends may have a picture??

I'm investigating the survival of examples of the Vanguard Sportsman model. To my surprise, I've discovered that this was initially attempted in 1968 (when the cars were only 12 years old or less) with the establishment of a Sportsman Register. This was set up by a Geoff Smith, based in Wolverhampton - I've no idea whether this had any connection with the Club. They had at least one outing - to Canley, where around 10 examples of the Sportsman turned up. My very helpful source on this has even been able to provide me with a badge of the Register, but is unable to locate any lists of members cars. He is clear however that one edition of the Standard Review of around that time included an article on the Register. I'd therefore be very grateful if someone who has copies of the Review of around that time (+/- a year or two) would be able to look for that article, and either let me know the edition or preferably let me have a copy of the article. And, of course, if anyone has any more information on the register I'd be very grateful for anything you've got. Many thanks Mike I have now looked through all my issues of The Standard Triumph Review for 1968. This was the last year of publication in that format(as a Factory sponsored publication) The Sportsman Register is mentioned twice - firstly I can find reference in the May 1968 with an announcement that a Sportsman Register is being formed and inviting owners of such cars to write to Geoff Smith. What is interesting is that it does state that only 911 saloons and a few estate versions were built. The second mention that I can find is in the November issue - reminding readers of its existence, then stating that 20 examples are now recorded on the Register including one example located in Los Angeles, California. Unfortunately, December 1968 was the last issue of The Standard Triumph Review. It was replaced in January 1969 by a new publication called "High Road" which covered the whole of the British Leyland range. When I get chance, I will look through my issues of "Stanalgia" which was the Standard Register magazine and continued in publication until the mid 1970's.

Very many thanks for taking the trouble to look for this. The 911 number is interesting. 901 is the number given most often, plus around 50 Vanguards/Vignales (including estates) with Sportsman engines and given the TDD commission numbers. Maybe the 50 estimate is too high? The Los Angeles car is almost certainly the one featured on this website when it came up for sale a few years ago, still in good condition. It was sent over for the 1956 New York Motor Show - a lack of further subsequent exports to the US speaks for itself. At a club do a couple of years ago I met an ex-employee of Standard Triumph in the US. He confirmed that in fact he knew of two Sportsman cars in the US - one the show car and the other a private import by a company man. He understood that the latter had been written off in New Mexico.
Any further news of the Sportsman Register would be much appreciated. Thanks again, Mike
