So there I was a few months ago, thinking I might get a pre-war Standard to keep EVE the Eight company only to find that I couldn't find suitable storage locally.
Well things moved on and a garage in the same block as EVE's came available so I started looking to expand my stable so to speak.
My resolve was set, or so I thought and I began my search for perhaps a Flyer or a Big 9. One place I was searching was Classic Cars .co.uk and I used a search that showed me the closest cars first and that's when it happened.
I logged in one evening and the first car in the list was not pre-war but it was definitely made by the Standard Motor Company and it was my boyhood dream. No not a TR but a 1970 Vitesse Mk2 saloon in white with black side flashes, factory sunroof and fake Rostyle wheel trims.
Why is that my dream? Well in 1970 I had been driving for a year and the Vitesse was the car to have but it was not insurable for me.
A few years down the line and I could afford a Vitesse, but I could also afford a TR6, guess which one won that battle? Anyway I never did have a Vitesse and somehow it was an itch I apparently have to scratch.
I viewed the Vitesse the next day, it is in very good condition both mechanically and cosmetically and rust free with one owner from new to 2009. I looked at it, it looked at me, that beautiful 6 cylinder grumbled into life and I was sold.
Actually I did inspect and test it properly but happily it met my expectations and needs just enough work to inspire me to bring it up to the same standard as EVE.
Of course this means that I am now looking for yet another garage so my 1930's aspirations can be achieved.
Still at least the Vitesse is a Standard in all but name.
