Thank you for the 'Happy Christmas and New Year' message on the Home Page. However - mine would be even happier if someone would remove the apostrophe from "it's"!!! Thank you, in anticipation - Tom.

Why would you need to do that Tom? It’s is the abbreviation for it is. Kind regards, Gareth.

"The Committee of the Standard Motor Club wish it’s Members..." would make no sense if written as "The Committee of the Standard Motor Club wish it is Members..." There is no need for an abbreviation! It should read "The Committee of the Standard Motor Club wish its Members..."!

Yes, of course you are right, but blinking heck chaps, it’s ! a Christmas wishes post. Perhaps we should shoot Father Christmas! or Father Xmas, just to annoy! There must be more to the spirit of Christmas than exercising grammatical correctness. Sounds a bit sad to me, when you compare the number of wos, cos and lack of punctuation, but....... Surely language is simply a method of communication, and if the message is communicated and understood - however it is written - then that could be considered as adequate. Kind regards and early Christmas wishes. Gareth.

Blink heck chaps it's only November, Christmas is another month away Personally I am more offended by the full stop after "worldwide" where there should be a comma I suspect the committee set it as a Christmas "spot the deliberate mistake" puzzle, or secretly decided to put it there and see how many of us pedants complained!! Roger Xmas wishes to follow when it is time!

Tongue in cheek - Xmas for Christmas? Really not on, since such a word divorces itself from the meaning of Christmas. Oh dear! Kind regards, Gareth.

Him/her/it -> his/hers/its.
It’s really not difficult to remember once you group it with its friends. Nobody would write hi’s or her’s.

Motyblod is used to marking exam papers, hence he was the first to spot it, no A* exam pass for the author of the Christmas Greeting!! (Tongue in cheek of course!!)

Those of you who complain of the poor English on the Website might volunteer to take on the vacant Webmaster's role. That way you would be making a positive contribution, instead of just being critical of other volunteer's efforts to help.
But I understand how easy this forum makes it for you to just throw stones.
Disappointing Phil
Applications for the post of volunteer Webmaster to secretary@standardmotorclub.org.uk please

Apologies Phil (and everyone else). I certainly didn't intend any offence or criticism and thought it was all very "tongue in cheek" and I am sure the other posters did as well. But as you say a forum makes it easy, too easy, to "have a dig" at someone else's hard work, also for people's comments to be misinterpreted.

Very much tongue in cheek (as I said) from me as well. No more than light hearted banter to hopefully bring a ray of sunshine to these cold and wet days! Criticism and offence meant? Certainly not. Positive thinking now:- A contribution to the forum, and better than it being stagnant? As always, kind regards, Gareth.

I took it as good humoured banter as well, but Phil's right we do need more help running the club, Phil's doing the website alongside his many other duties with the club & we need spares fulfilment officers who have storage space to hold stocks of spares to send out and there are other posts where we need more volunteers - see the various ads that appear in the club magazine every month.
