I'm trying to nail down the exact vintage of a Standard 8 chassis number 335861. It's located in Israel, is RHD and probably was brought in by the Mandate authorities. The car has just undergone major restoration but still lack details such as badges, trafficators, correct tail lights etc.

Hi. This number was about September 1940. The number should have N in front. It is possible that this car was not registered until after the WW2 as this did happen. The cars built after the war had only 5 numbers on the commission plate and the letters in front were NA. Hope this helps initially. Regards Ian.

Hello David, That doesn't appear to be a chassis number, as it would be proceeded by one or two letters. It might be the body number used by the bodybuilders, Fisher and Ludlow. The commission number will be on a plate on the bulkhead/firewall. All the commission numbers you need are on the website. Those for Standard 8 39-47 are here: www.standardmotorclub.org.uk/cars/flying/comm.htmor if its a 53-58 standard 8, they are here www.standardmotorclub.org.uk/cars/eights/comm.htmHope that helps, please let us know what you have Regards Webmaster

Sorry Ian,
There are no 6 digit commission numbers on 8's. I repeat, this is not a commission number

Thanks to everyone for the useful info. The number I quoted seem to be for the body. The plate is on the left side of the bulkhead and the full text is 'Fisholow 335816'. On the right side of the bulkhead are 4 empty holes which is probably where the plate with the chassis number was. The chassis number I have was gleaned from the licence documentation. It says Year of Manufacture 1946, chassis number 5812. Note no prefix.
