Hi everyone
This Discussion follows on from "Worcestershire Boundary Road Run = Spring 2016"
My name is Mark O’Neill (I drive Bertie, 1956 Standard Super Ten) and I am happily a ‘member’ of our club in the midlands.
I am in the process of organising the "Worcestershire County Boundary Classic Car Tour 2016", to take place on Saturday 2nd April 2016. I am purposefully keeping away from the 2016 "Drive it Day" so as not to disrupt events that are already planned.
The planned tour route almost circumnavigates the Worcestershire County Boundary. Starting near Stourbridge the route passes through Bewdley, Tenbury Wells, Shelsey Walsh, Malvern, Upton upon Severn, Evesham, Broadway, Redditch & Wythall before returning to the start point. It is an arduous route and may not be suitable for all classic cars. There are country lanes. A, B & C roads. dual carriageways, and at least two long long steep hills (up and down). I have planned it round my perceived capabilities of my 1956 Standard Super Ten (Bertie). I hope he makes it!
There will be 4 or 5 notified rest points along the route, which is approximately 135 miles long. It will take most of the day for us to complete it. THIS IS NOT A RACE. The cars will need to be at the start point by 8:30 am for the 9:00am kick-off of the first cars.
I intended to attract about 20 classic cars (advisably a navigator aboard). More would have been nice. However, it seems the word is out and I already have upwards of the initial 20 cars from another car club. I wonder if we could match them with Standards?? If there are many more than 40 applications the numbers may need to be limited and another date will be arranged for those who cannot access the 'first’ run. This road trip is not exclusively aimed at the SMC and the Black Country Classic Car Club. A large number would be an impressive spectacle and maybe even worthy of some news paper column space.
I’m trying to keep it simple so will print the actual route cards myself and issue them on the day. I am unable to charge as I am not a business. However, there are costs of around £10 per car associated with the activity, so if drivers would like to offer some support it would be greatly appreciated. This will help me cover the day’s administration.
What do I need from you?
Could you send your contact details to me on a 'Personal Message' to advise you want a registration form for this event. I will send one back to the email provided as soon as possible. Due to the numbers anticipated late-registering applicants are quite likely to be disappointed on the day.
Refreshments will need to be paid for, by the teams, as they visit some of the nominated “rest” venues.
Along the route I have sought out interesting and suitable venues where the entrants might take a break, have a cuppa and use of the necessary facilities. There are also alternatives should the car parks be full on our arrival.
If this activity proves successful I intend to follow up with a second, possibly more challenging route later in the year.
A Registration Form for the venture should be returned to me by end of January 2016 for you to be included in the 2nd April 2016 event. This will ensure all admin has been completed before we start. Just turning up on the day may lead to disappointment as there may not be room or route cards for ‘late' teams.
I hope this makes sense.
Please feel free to ask any questions.
Speak soon. Mark
