I was delighted to read the blog entry of Browetts of Leicester, particularly about their being Swallow Doretti dealers as I own the only Doretti they ever sold, which after a fairly chequered existence from about 1960 to 1997 is now a regular attender at Club and classic car events. There is a link to its full history on www.doretti.co.ukClick on the Gallery tab and go to chassis 1200 to which parts one and two of the story of the car are linked. All Dorettis seem to have been sold through the Standard Triumph dealership network worldwide and I have a very poor copy of an Australian Standard Triumph price list showing the Doretti as the most expensive car with the Vanguard estate, of which I also own an example, coming next. There is also a well known American Standard Triumph brochure showing the Doretti,TR3,Vanguard phase 2 and Vanguard Cadet (Standard 8). As for the photo of the Herald allegedly being handed over to Mr.G.W.Hayes, I believe it is Mr.Hayes handing over the Herald. He was a salesman at Browetts in the late 50s and 60s and now lives about 3 miles from me.I first met him at a show where I was with my Doretti and he remembered it coming in for service. He still owns several Fergie tractors. Though I was handed a lot of photos of my Doretti in the 1950s taken by the late first owner, who I managed to trace before he died in about 2009,there are none of it at Browetts and I'd love to find one of the car in their showroom or workshop. Arthur Prince's Garage Limited of Loughborough said to still be a family business the current MD is Geoff Prince. I wonder how many Standard Triumph dealers still have their founding families involved?

Hi Steve,
Could I draw your attentin to Dutton Forshaw Lytham St Annes. In 1970 they sold my Vitesse Mk2 to her first owner and then continued to service her until 63000 miles in 1997 when ill health cuased the owner to take her off the road. By 97 they had become Jaguar Dealers but continued to support their old customers. I have the original order, build sheet and invoice from them plus the tax disc holder from 1970 that survived in the glove box until I found it last year. If it is of interest to you I can probably scan or photograph them and email or post them here.

Hello Stephen, There was a Standard Truimph dealer in Bridgend (S. Wales) who operated until around late 1970 s before moving to Datsun. Peter Smith Motors was the name and they had my 35 12hp. on display as a show car for many years.
Also another earlier ST dealer over near the cattle market in the town. Name evades me at the moment, but will find out for you.
Do you have anything on Taylor Bros. of Stroud? They supplied this car when new. Kind regards, Gareth.

H C Foster Ltd., Riverside Motor, Riverside? I have nothing on Taylor Bros of Stroud yet. They are not in my 1955 or 1965 directories when did they sell Standards? Google search: 1964 Stroud street directory - Taylor Bros (Stroud) Ltd Gloucester road motor car agents & dealers -- from the local paper: July 1966? A LONG established cycling and motor business in Stroud was to close. Taylor Bros Ltd, in Gloucester Street, had served generations of cycling schoolboys and vehicle owners in its 70-year history. The firm was to close because its two directors, Mr and Mrs Staines, announced their retirement after serving the company since 1945. -- I have several Standard Triumph dealer directories but the earliest I have is 1955. It is difficult for me to be sure about earlier especially pre-war dealers except by stuff I have collected such adverts. It would be good to get a pre-war dealer list.

It's possible that Taylor's of Stroud were not Standard dealers. My Ensign de luxe has a plate inside stating that it was supplied by the Totland Service Station on the Isle of Wight, which were Morris dealers. Standards supplied the car to the Standard Triumph dealer : Borough Hall Motors of Newport I.O.W, who must have then delivered it straight to Totland, where the original owner lived. I've got the full service history & it appears to have always been serviced by Totland Service Station. Re other Standard dealers, my Father had his first car a 1937 Standard 12 serviced by Hatherleigh Garage at Sidcup, our nearest Standard dealer. When we moved to Gravesend he used Davidson & Sutor & then bought a couple of Ensigns from Drake's of Dartford, again Standard dealers. I remember going to see the "new " Ensign at W.T Richard's at Bexleyheath. When we moved to Berkshire my Dad had his Ensign serviced at Twyford Service Garage & subsequently bought a Herald 13/60 estate & then a Dolomite 1850 from them. My nearest garage here in Lincolnshire is S & J Jenkinson of Long Sutton, who were Standard dealers. One of the mechanics, called Brian, was a Standard trained mechanic & set my overdrive up last year by his old books!!

Hello Stephen, Many thanks for the reply re the Bridgend dealer. The Riverside address is certainly correct for the dealer you mentioned, but i must admit the name Fosters does not ring bells with me. I will do some checking with a couple of pals who are far better than I on the memory side! I will get back to you in a few days on this.
Back to Peter Smith Motors:- I believe Peter (still around) first operated under the trading name of Waterton Cross Motors - believed from about 1954. I am pretty sure they were recognised ST dealers, and I will do some digging for you.
Taylor of Stroud:- Many thanks Pete. They operated as Standard dealers in King Street during the mid 1930s and traded as Taylors Automobiles, having come into the trade via. the practical aspects of boot and shoe making, then through the cycle trade as you say Stephen. A common route into the motortrade in the early days. They had a cylce shop on the corner of Bath St. and Gloucester Rd., as well as a a motor repair garage at Merrywalks, but it is fairly certain they had a showroom in King Street. It is believed the family continued with a strong motortrade connection in the town and may have once held a Vauxhall dealership. Hope some of this helps. Kind regards, Gareth.

Hello Sephen, Now been able to check on the name given for the Bridgend Standard dealer and my good pal has confirmed it was indeed H.C. Foster. If you do a search until Bridgend Revisited and then search for Scurlocks Garage you will see a colour photo of Riverside Garage in the 1970s when it as then owned by the Scurlock family and run as a Saab agency. My belief is that Fosters would have ceased the Standard Truimph dealership in the 60s and the agency would have been transferred to Peter Smith at Waterton Cross Motors. If you did want to follow this up, Peter still trades as Bridgend Motor Factors and Thunder - road motor cycles - both in Tremains Rd. In the town. The Waterton Croos garage is believed to be still owned by him, but now operates as a disabled appliance showroom. Hope this helps. Kind regards, Gareth. p.s. I will come back to you if I gather anymore information.

Stephen - I wonder if you can help regarding the history of my car, a Phase 1 Vanguard estate. The earliest info I was able to get from the DVLA is that in October 1983, it was sold by Michael Freeman Motors, The Camp, Stroud, Gloucs. Do you know anything about this company? The address implies it might have had links with the military and they did use Vanguards. Could it be that an ex-military vehicle was being sold to the public? Thanks - Tom.

By 1983 your car would have been an old used car. Michael Freeman Motors may have been a used car trader. You can look up dealers in my collection of Standard Triumph car dealer directories: vitessesteve.blogspot.co.uk/2016/03/triumph-car-dealer-directories.html
