Hello Tom, If you would like to PM me your registration number - or post on here would be better if you are happy to - then I will see what digging I can do to point you in the right direction in terms of its history search.
Although the DVLA should not be ignored as a source of information I'm sure it will be appreciated that the computerisation of records did not start there until c1983. Some owners have been lucky and managed to obtain 'historical' information passed to DVLA at the the time of first recording, and sometimes DVLA did copy and retain this, so it was a good move to at least try them on the off chance. Kind regards, Gareth.

Stephen - thank you for the website link. Gareth - I contacted the DVLA when I first bought the ambulance and they sent me photocopies of the info they had from 1983 onwards. The amb has had 7 reg numbers since 1983; then, it was LWD 290. Currently it's KHC 550. If you or anyone else is interested in the other numbers, they are in an article I wrote about the amb which is on this site. Go to the SMC Home Page; in the Search Box, type: standard vanguard estate; scroll just past half way and you'll see the item titled Tom Dolby's Vanguard Estate.

A very interesting article, and particularly strange why it should have had so many changes of period registration numbers.
The first number recorded at the time the DVLA record was set was LWD 290 - if I read it correctly- and this would make sense in relation to its build date. The LWD sequence was first issued by Warwickshire CC in Dec. 1951 and ran only until March 52, so I would put 290 at around late Jan/early Feb. of 1952. Home trade restrictions on new vehicles come to mind - so who did own it??
My first port of call would now be Warwickshire Archive to see if they retain records of first registration for this sequence. Perhaps unlikely since this was a volume registration county, but you never know until you try.
The fact that the was registered with a county number so close to its build date would tend to dispel the military connection. However, counties were not always consistent in the way in which they dealt with vehicles registered some years after they were first built/used, but most commonly, they tended (then) to be allocated numbers which were current at the date they were registered in "private hands" particularly if they were ex military.
I would certainly try Warwickshire Archives, and failing that it has the makings for a nice potentially fact finding article in a newspaper local to that area. Good luck with it. Kind regards, Gareth.

I believe Mumfords of Newton Abbot was established following the take over of A C Bulpin & Son Ltd who had been a Standard Triumph garage in 1955. I am not sure of the date of the take over. Do you have any info about Mumfords, Newquay Road, Truro.
