OK, if you can't beat them, join them, and all that.
VPF169, my very early Standard 10, was built on 17th July 1954 and first registered on 17th August 1954. It's a Guildford registration. However, I've now discovered that all of the Surrey registration records were sent to the DVLA in 1978 when the computersised records were set up, and the DVLA haven't kept them.
By 11 January 1978 it was owned by an Albert Riddles of Lancing, and he kept the car until 1994, after which it has had a succession of owners none of whom did anything much with it. Its last tax ran out in 1994, and if its present condition is anything to go by it must have been an MOT failure (the sills have virtually disappeared!)
Anyway, I have the history from 1978 onwards because I was able to get that from the DVLA (for a fee). What I would like to do is find out more about its history from 1954-1978. As Mr. Riddles kept the car for so long it is quite possible that he owned it for some years before 1978, perhaps even from new, but with no original registration documents it will be difficult to find out.
What I'm wondering is whether anyone knows who the Standard-Triumph dealers were in the Surrey area, and whether any of their sales records might survive somewhere? It's a long shot, but it seems to be the only chance, unless Mr. Riddles is still in circulation in the Lancing area - and as time goes by, that gets less likely.
Answers on a postcard please! (Or on here...)
Thanks, Phil

Hi Phil
If the car was registered in Guildford, then I would suspect that it was supplied by Puttocks of Guildford. I believe that Puttocks still exist in Guildford, but whether they have any sales records of 50 years ago I wouldnt like to say.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll see what I can find out.
Pete - my other 10 is from Moores in Brighton, but theirs used the xCD / xUF series registrations. If mine is anything to go by, they also bear a dealer's plaque on the inside of the n/s/f door. I've also seen a Moores plaque in a different style on the dashboard of a much older (30s or 40s) Standard which is in the club.
Anyway, VPF is definitely Guildford, not Brighton.
Cheers all, Phil
