To all those who do their own welding HELP please. I need to put some new sills on my poorly St 8 and have never welded in my life, but am keen to learn. Can anyone out there advise me on what would be a good make type and size. I dont want to spend a fortune but I want to do a proper job. Iv heard gas mig welders are good for cars, but you guys (and Gals) are doing it, so it seems the best place to ask. Any tips or pitfalls would be appriciateted to.

Hi there, As you are in Exeter-ish, it may be an idea to contact Chris Bowden who is in the process of welding up his Flying 8. I believe he has a MIG welder and can probably give you some advice. In the past I have used a MIG and have got on with it well. In fact professional welders who have used electric welders and gas welders in the past, tend to find it awkward to convert to using a MIG. I am sure Chris won't mind me giving out his phone number of 01392-664952. Greetings from the Devon and Cornwall Group Brian

hi Alan about welding gas takes a long time to learn the best for you is MIG you can get gas MIGs and gas less MIGs but you will need to practice a lot if you get a MIG buy a turbo cooled one but i would advise you to get some one how can weld to put your sills on as to much heat can distort the sill you will have to cut the old sill off air chisel is good for the job i have been welding for years and i weld the top of the sill with MIG and the bottom with gas [machine world sell good MIGs or wolf-online.co.uk for £109.99 that is for a gas less one then you can start having fun Danny

Thanks guys for the quick reply. I will give Chris Bowden a call and pick his brains. I think a bit of investigation is in order and as you say it may be easeir at this stage to get the sills done by someone with experiance, rather than me messing them up, I will let you know how I get on.

Hi Falmouth I took your advise and spoke to Chris Bowden, nice chap. He was very helpful and we are going to meet up for a chat. Iv got the chance of a Mighty Mig 100xt turbo thats hardly been used and Chris seems to think that will do the job with a bit of practice and maybe a eveneing class or two or three or four. Thanks again for the info. Alan
