::)Hi everyone, jsut a note to say that now that I have found out how to bid on E bay, I have recently been bidding on several Standard related bits. and won some. So I would like to ask members not to out bid me on the items where 'tinaw8277' is shown as the current higher bidder, unless you are bidding for the same thing as being 'needed for your car', as opposed to just biddding for it to squirrel away as a spare part you feel you might need some day in the future if and when yours goes wrong. The bits I have got already, or am currently bidding for, are needed because mine are already needing replacements. It would seem silly to be outbid by a Standard member for items I am needing to keep my Penny on the road, when the other bidder is just looking fo any bits to hoard. Please think about it. Thanks, ( and that goes for you too Ian!) Tina

Mine are for the good of the Club. However we do have a band of members who do not normally bid against each other and you are welcome to that band. Regards Ian.

Ian, that was sort of just a tongue in ckeek item, I wasn't "getting at you" particularly. (At least I am fairly positive I think I wasn't, I think!) I have already got 3 or 4 items and am currently bidding on some others as well including for some bits for the Triumph. Tina

Just a point regarding ebay. I have noticed some new activity on that site. These appear to be (And sometimes confirmed) that these are new Standard owners. When I have been in contact with them they are indeed new Club Members sourcing books etc. What I would suggest is to join the Club first then look through the Additional Items section in Standard Review. A new Member/Owner recently paid £21 plus £2 postage for an instruction book which is on sale on that page for £12 inc postage. IT PAYS TO JOIN THE STANDARD MOTOR CLUB FIRST AND IF YOU DO SO FROM THIS SITE AND LET ME KNOW YOU HAVE JOINED THEN A FREE BOOK RELATIVE TO YOUR CAR WILL BE SENT WITH YOUR FIRST ORDER.
Regards Ian.

I am dradnats12 (standard12 backwards) for the same reason that flying12 was taken, who will own up to having it?
Congrats on your promotion Ian, you deserve it for your contributions! (The server decides!)
Regards, Phil

::)Seems like I have stirred the wasps nest up with this one! Didn't mean to! Nice to see you have become a full member Ian. I have been in the SMC since the 90s and seem to be still a "New Member" which does seem a bit silly, but without any other reasonable explanation for this I suppose someone has a reason for it being this way for which we are not being made party to. There are a few who are aware of my ebay name. I do watch every Standard item that I am aware of and if I know there is a Standard owner (Club Member) bidding will often hold off. However I have a list of wants for members and try to satisfy them. Also I find that in the last few minutes a late bid comes through from an "unknown" and rather than let the item go to a dealer/collector I will try to secure it for the Club. Quite a lot of Club supplies have come from the "Spin Off" whereby observers have noted my Standard buying and have made direct contact for quantities of items available. At this very moment Standard 10 brake cylinders are being discussed and a quantity of pre war spares are in the process of discussion. Hope this helps make the situation clearer. Regards Ian.

There is no secret about allocation of membership status other than it has nothing to do with how long you have been in the Standard Motor Club. Neither does the webmaster set the rules. The plain fact is that when you join the MESSAGEBOARD the server on which it runs decides, not suprisingly, you are a "new" member (of the messageboard) . It then appears that you graduate to a full member after 100 entries which is what has happened in Ians case. No one else is anywhere near, including you Tina. Work harder and you too will become a Full member!

Tongue-in-cheek, right. It's an auction isn't it. I only trace Flying bits, searching for Standard generates too many hits. Been some spectacular results on eBay recently, one 12 C cyl head went for close to 200 quid. Must be the SSII connection. It may console everone I outbid in February on the new steering nut that it turned out to be an extremely worn one put back in the box when repaced. The seller obviuosly having acted in good faith very fairly offered to take it back. I later bought another one , unused this time, from the always very helpful John Davis. Transformed the car! Another worthwhile improvement recently was replacing the fouling-up prone Lodge plugs I fitted because I thought they looked attractive with the plainer looking Champions. That obtained easier starting and the ability to advance the ignition few degrees. Regards Bo

Interesting comments. I have had several items described as perfect, as new. almost unused but when thay arrive they are well worn and some bonnet badges had a hole drilled through the centre with a bolt in it. I have had refunds on all except one. You are right it is an auction, and when I started on this route nearly 3 years ago there seemed no interest in Standard items and several sellers contacted me direct afterwards saying they had these items for years with no takers. That clearly has changed. But it has shown that the statement made over many years that there is no Standard stuff around is clearly not so. I do think that some sellers are getting greedy with there start prices and I have told them so, but if we do not buy at those prices they will have to come back lower.(Unless someone really wants it and pays the higher price) At least this subject has brought out some opinions. Well done Tina.

Ian, I have just been offered what is purported to be a bumper for a 8/10/ Pennant on e bay, by someone I am bidding with for a Pennant tail light surround, (which I do need), and the bumper does not seem to be that to me. It is curved in the picture with only 2 holes in it. Mine are straight across the centres, and have 4 holes and the front one has the crank hole in it as well and the rear has the lip for the numberplate light. I have e- mailed him to point this out, but being curved it might even be a V3 front bumper, if it is a Standard one at all but I think even then mine has 4 holes attaching it. It could be for a completely different car! I have asked him if it has a "Stanpart number" on the package, or on it, and await his reply on that. Triumphs also had Stanpart numbers it might be a bumper off a Triumph. So if you come across this item hold fire till it is identified better. If it IS a V3 bumper then I want to try to get it, but not if it's not. I have now removed the clutch release bearing from my old spare gearbox, and after cleaning it think it is good fo another turn or three. Now, I have to worry about how to get the dammed heavy gearbox off my car, to look inside to see what is rattling as a clutch itself rarely makes a din like this does, unless a pressure plate spring has broken, but I doubt it as it drove OK when going the last time I used it, (it's MOT has expired but I may take it in for MOT with the rattle, as it is not part of the test unless it prevents it from driving, which it dosen't do so far!. A new plate would obviously be a very good idea to be fitted when it comes off (didn't you say you had a spare one? ), but I might have to take some time off form the office to do it, as time is galloping by now and I wanted to take it to Stratford this year. I still favour the fault to be the release bearing breaking up, as the din does seem to stop even when the lightest pressure is put on the pedal without even going as far as moving the clutch. Also after all that recent work I did on the cylinder head I still seem to have got the camshaft noise as well. So it seems that I may well have a badly wourn camshaft to contend with too, and to get that out the head will have to come off again to remove the tappets to get it out, so that is quite a major undertaking to look forward to again. It never seems to rain here without bucketing down does it? Tina
