If you experience erratic running it is worth checking out the carburretor float chamber. Although the filter may be fairly clear it is surprising how fine particles can get into the chamber and ultimately into the jets. Start at the glass container in the fuel pump and clean out, then to the float chamber and jets. Check the filter also. These filters are of brass mesh and the holes may require a finer in line filter to avoid future problems. It is worth bearing in mind that petrol does contain added water (legally) but at certain times there may be a higher than normal water content ie if the petrol forecourt tank is very low, and that can cause erratic firing until the fuel is run through and refilled. I had this problem recently on a diesel van and almost took it off the road fearing injector problems but after re filling at another fuel station it soon returned to normality. Ian Leggett
