Practical Classics Restoration and Classic Car Show 2015
Come and join us on 28th and 29th March at the N.E.C. Here are brief descriptions of the 4 cars on our stand 5 -542
Vanguard Phase II cabriolet Evocation*
This stunning Cabriolet is a good-looking replica of the cars produced by the Imperia Company in Belgium. It is based on the 1953 Phase II Vanguard. The car is owned by John Huckle who is a serial Vanguard restorer, having completed 27 restorations to date. TPL 341 began life as a 1953 Phase II saloon, and came into John’s possession in 2004. He used it as everyday transport for a number of years, before deciding to convert it in 2010. The reconstruction is now almost complete. John calls it the “Flop-Top”. This is a brief description of the work required to build the Cabriolet, which must be very similar to the work carried out by Imperia. First the sills and chassis outriggers were removed and replaced with box section members to give it strength when the roof was removed. The front ends of the side members were tied into new strengthened A-posts, the roof was cut off and a strengthened header rail incorporated. The side box girders were then covered with new sills. The B posts were moved back by 8 inches and the front doors lengthened by the same amount. The rear doors were dispensed with and the space filled with sheet steel. The passenger compartment was shortened by bringing the boot top panel forward by 6 inches then returning it to the floor. A folding hood frame was fabricated, including rear quarter windows that fold down with the hood. The car was then finished in a light green metallic paint with a dark green vinyl hood. The dashboard has been chrome-plated. As I write the interior is being re-trimmed in two-tone green. The car is running on its original engine and drivetrain which has not required restoration John is on the stand and will be delighted to give you more information about the car * - Evocation – a fond memory of something from the past.
1929 Standard Big 9 Dating from 1929, the Big 9 saloon was laid up in the early 1970’s .This is probably one of the longest running restorations ever undertaken, and after some 50 years it is still in progress, as you can see on today’s stand. The current owner, Mike Wilkes, has the engine reconditioned and running and is now addressing paintwork and trim tasks , some of which items will be addressed on the stand over this weekend. Mike will be on the Stand to answer questions.
1926 Standard Model SLO4 “Charlecote” This is the Coupé version of the SLO4 chassis with a de-luxe two seater body with thingyey and wind-up windows. It was restored in the early 1960’s by it’s current owner, Paul Newsome, from the original Standard distributors in Coventry. Paul actively campaigns the car in the Coventry area and further afield every year. Typical of the quality cars produced by the Canley factory in the 1920’s, it goes on providing reliable everyday transport. In addition to exhibiting the car, the owner will be demonstrating the build up of a spare SLO4 engine on the Club’s stand. We hope you find it fascinating.
Mystery Car ?
The Standard Motor Club The stand today is presented and manned by members of the Standard Motor Club. The Club, which has members in 28 countries, is dedicated to keeping this often overlooked marque in the public eye and demonstrate the desirability of these cars to Classic Car enthusiasts. The Standard Motor Company took over the defunct Triumph name in 1945 and turned it into a worldwide success. Our membership of 1000 benefit from an excellent in-house spares service that does its best to cater for what are thought to be some 200 different models produced over a 60 year period at the “Standard” Coventry.
If you present your ticket stubs or online ticket receipt on the stand you will receive free coffee! Do not let the doorstaff keep them!

The club stand looked great yesterday, with a great selection of our cars, come and say hello and have a coffee if you are visiting the show. The Regalia section has a full range of club items for sale. Hope to see you. Richard

You're right. But I'll stick with my original question.....why not put the pictures up on here? I use probably half a dozen car forums, this one is by far and away the one with the least pictures.
