I may be buying a car and I need some info. He says its a 1948 Standard Flying Eight and I really want to know how rare it is. I live in Canada so I was wondering how many were shipped over to North America? It still runs but needs interior and paint work but my first thoughts since I'm more of a hot rodder wass to put a frame with a straight axle front end and go the gasser route becuase it basically looks like an Anglia but I'm starting to think twice about it. Becuase I am quite the car guy and this was the first time I had ever heard of the Standard motor company so I started to think how rare would it be and be it be better to restore it. Thanks for any info or help. Any website with production numbers etc.. would help.

All the Flying Standard Commisssion Numbers are here: www.standardmotorclub.org.uk/cars/flying/comm.htm. Sorry the page is malformed, I will get round to fixing it shortly. From here you will see that the last recorded number for a Postwar 8 is 42063 so assuming all the numbers were used, thats how many were built. 95% would have been UK delivered so I doubt if more than a couple of dozen made it to North America. No more than a few dozen survive anywhere in the world today. Its rare but that does NOT make it valuable. Buy it and restore it only if you like it, don't expect to make money out of it. Heres one thats been heavily customised and is now raced: www.standardmotorclub.org.uk/cars/flying/features/racingstandard8.htmHope that helps. Phil
