I insured my Little 9 for the road in June this year. Using the clubs "check your insurance" facility I found it was not showing up on the Motor Insurance Database". I have been in touch with the broker who advised me that there is a problem with the MID computer system and they have tried on a number of occasions to get vehicles added without success. As a vehicle now has to be SORN or insured I was advised that if I got a letter advising me that I was committing an offence I should refer them to the broker direct. I also imagine I could be stopped by the police for driving an uninsured vehicle as they would use this database. Would be interested to know if any other member finds their car not showing up as insured.

As John rightly says the police do have direct access to the MID however it is not an offence for your vehicle to be missing from the database and production of a valid certificate, or not if one doesn't exist, is the required proof.
Similarly the DVLA may request proof of insurance before issuing a taxation marker. Remember even though pre 1974 cars are exempt you still have to apply for the free tax as it were. If you did this online then your MID entry must have been completed or you couldn't have completed the application. If you applied by post or at a Post Office and produced your certificate then this will update the DVLA and police records.
That said the MID record should exist, but the onus for making the entries lies with the insurance providers and obviously delays and errors can occur.
Out of interest I've just checked both my classics which were insured in June and they are shown on the register but the Vitesse is shown as a convertible in error.
There are a number of potential mistakes, such as getting characters wrong or transposed, in this process so possibly the problem lies with your insurer.

There are a couple of interesting points here. If it were me, I would be concerned if a broker has not been able to enter your vehicle onto the MID even thought it's been insured since June. A broker handles money on behalf of the insurer - the insurer insures - if you see what I mean. I would be checking with the insurer to make sure you are not running an uninsured car. Re DvLA and taxing:- as strange as it may seem, they only check MOT status ( if applicable) before processing tax. They do not check the MID. Same situation at Post Offices. No I didn't believe it either!

If a person wants to check that their car is in fact recorded on MID & DVLA also where would they look as it appears that STANDARDS are not listed properly.

You can check you MID entry, as I did, from the Standard Clubs homepage. Look at the column on the far left and go to the 'Check your car insurance' entry. Hope this helps

Darrell, the problem with looking up your car on the DVLA database is that the 'make' is often entered wrongly on the V5C as it is not on the drop-down menu so is entered manually. One of mine is a STANDARD on the V5C and the other is a STANDARD TEN and I have also come across a STANARD...

Yes and they spell Triumph "TRUMAN" Please be aware that the DVLA check will not show you the insurance status of your car only tax, SORN and MOT. Also the MID is an Insurance Industry database not a government asset. I believe that use of it by insurers is not compulsory.

Quick update to my original post. Both my cars Registration numbers are now appearing on the MID database. BUT both are being shown with a make of Dummy ssp Dummy, whatever that means. Looks like another phone call to my brokers.
