Hello All, ive just purchased a standard vanguard sportsman reg 401 bpk, which was until recently on show at the heritage museum gaydon. I awaiting to collect the car, so i cant tell you too much at the moment. I purchased this car from a classic car company who had it (I believe) direct from Gaydon. Question; Does anyone have any info, (good or bad) on this vehicle. I would be most grateful. Allthough its in great shape I intend restore it further, as its been off the road for many years, though just sailed through an mot. I write this in anticipated excitement. Please make contact if you know anything, however small about this car. Many thankseveryone. Don. (Tonbridge area, Kent. 01622 816855. or email dat240@msn.com

Hi Don, Several members watched this car being sold at Gaydon a few weeks ago. Also several of us watched you bidding to buy it on ebay. You have a very rare car now with perhaps only a dozen survivors out of only 905 built. Using a twin carb engine as in the TR3 it give more performance but could not be called a success. I have a full workshop manual, a full spare parts manual and an instruction maintenance book for this car available to buy. Also a wiring diagram and a lubrication chart. If you have the lot for £50 I will put in free a book (£9 Value) with reprints about many Standards of that era with items on the Sportsman included. If you can visit us at Bovington Tank Museum on July 2nd for our International Rally you will meet many of us likeminded Standard owners. Regards Ian Leggett.

Hi Ian, yes Im picking up this posting lark, (I think), I thought you had left another message you see, as I had already seen your comments, then got your email saying ive left a message. If that all makes sense.
This is the latest.
im in negotiation over the gaydon car, couldnt complete due to a personal reason, now Ive had to grovel to the guy and say sorry, (of course, thats only right), thing is he has now fixed the overdrive, which was a selanoid problem, and also a snappy clutch. He seems to think he can get £3 grand maybe £3 and half grand now. Im not going to go over £2500,though cos its been standing for many years, and could be a bit problematic. Would it be worth more than £2500 guys ? Were any club members tempted when it left the museum ? Why did it leave the museum anyway ? anyone know anything more ?. Youyrs gratefully Don.

Hi. Firstly Gaydon sid specialise in vehicles from the BMC/BL/Standard Triumph/Rover ranges which all came under British Leyland in the end. Although BMW became owners the policy stayed the same. Then along came Ford with the take over of Land Rover who were responsible for Gaydon. So additional car types are going in now and therefore some existing ones have to go. The Sportman had stood for a long time and while this keeps the condition good it can also mean that if taken on a longish run before a thorough running in it could develop problems. It would be essential to change all fluids, grease everything before used and then take a few short runs first as brake cylinders and water pumps may have deteriated. Then there are the tyres which may have good tread but are also very old.(Cars were raised from ground I believe to avoid flat spots) The members who saw the car sold were already owners like myself and usually one car is enough. The Sportsman although rare is not a much adored car amongst Vanguard owners. Yes it is faster, and thirstier. It also lacks some of the styling of the earlier models with the chunky chrome grills, and the Vanguard 3 (same body shape) can be bought at under £2000. The Sportsman was sold for about £1300-£1500 so I would stick out for £2500 if you can afford that amount. It will not depreciate but neither will it appreciate much and I cannot see it selling at all for £3000. Hope this helps.Regards Ian.

Hi Don. Your Sportsman was owned by a Mr S.A. Banks of Warwick back in December 1982.According to the club magazine he was member number 1055, so you may be able to obtain some info from him if you can locate him, he may still be a member?
