There will be loads of spares at rock bottom prices available to those attending the International Rally this year. DO NOT MISS THIS OPPORTUNITY, YOU WILL SAVE THE ENTRY COST MANY TIMES OVER. Regards Ian.

Sorry to correct you Darrell but the different doors indicate whether the car is a DHC(drop head coupe), or a Tourer. The Tourer has the cut away doors, the DHC the straight doors with wind-up windows. The most obvious physical difference pre- & post-war are the louvres on the former's bonnet sides that are not found on the post-war model.

Thats quite ok Alan I got carried away of course the post war and pre war tourers appear to only differ(door wise) in that the post war ones had door handles on the outside unlike the pre which had only inside handles. I hope that the owner sends me some photos

Quite why this topic is going on in a thread called International Rally is beyond me. But to correct the slight misunderstanding going on here: The doorhandles are not the only difference between the doors on pre and postwar 8 Tourers - far from it. The cutaway tops of both doors are the same but: The Tourer doors on prewar cars have a rounded bottom over deep sills, like Darrells, and are unique. The Tourer doors on Postwar cars are full depth and have sqaure bottoms, like Alan's, and are same as the pre and postwar DHC, in that respect. Peter54's car, by its description, would appear to be a DHC, which would be confirmed if it has windup windows and a postwar car if it has no bonnet side louvres. The real way to check is to compare the commissiopn number on the bulkhead with my guide published here www.standardmotorclub.org.uk/cars/flying/comm.htmFrom this you will see that the prewar Flying 8 has a commission number beginning with N and the postwar 8 ( not Flying 8) has a commission number beginning with NA My apologies that the page has become malformed, I will correct the layout shortly I have no reason to suspect that the postwar Tourer hood or frame is any different to the DHC, except that the Tourer came with sidescreens. That doesn't help peter54 other than he could look at any postwar Tourer or DHC with a view to copying it. Finally, to get back to the purpose of this thread, the International Rally details are easily found on the website under Events , but here is a link directly to it: www.standardmotorclub.org.uk/events/events_list.htm#49thRegards, Phil

OK, this is a postwar 8 Drophead Coupe, or used to be.
You have your work cut out, most importantly the sills which seem to be missing.........
Before you attempt this I recommend you contact our DVLA officer, Dennis, on dvla-rep@standardmotorclub.org.uk and seek his advice how to get this registered and the number retained, it isn't going to be easy. I suggest you do this immediately as he is going on holiday on 3rd June. I will email you his phone number because I dont publish club phone numbers on this open forum.
Good luck Phil

Jackie & Peter, Congratulations (or condolances) on the new baby. Wish you all the best with the restoration. As if you had'nt enough to do .... could I ask that you take a ton of photos of all the nooks and crannys of the car in it's dressed down state so taht:- a. you have a record of where you came from b. So that others with similar cars can see places that they did not even know existed (we are afraid to look... but would love to know what is behind that panel) You could post these on the Photobucket (search topics in the forum for details) of create your own series so that we could see. This also will help to identify bits and places when you might need assistance. Please see the following web address:- picasaweb.google.co.uk/patging/StandardFlyingEightTourer1939Details1?authkey=j4ugjnRnSno... which show bits of our car ... not the same as yours but similar. Regards and thanks, Pat

Firstly Congratulations on rescuing this Drop Head Coupe. Hope you can come along and meet us all at the Standard International Rally on 27th to 29th June www.standardmotorclub.org.uk/events/events_list.htm#49thYou will get a warm welcome and you will see some fine finished examples of 8s, as well as other Standards. You don't need to come in a Standard.
